What Is There To Do In Jim Thorpe?

Jim Thorpe is a historic Victorian town that many refer to as the “Switzerland of America”.  The first time we visited was during Christmas and the holiday decorations throughout were simply beautiful. 

What is there to do in Jim Thorpe? There are quite a few things actually.

Jim Thorpe is a great, quaint, walking town, with lots of beautiful architecture, shopping and historic sites to visit.

Jim Thorpe is less than an hour away from Feels Like Heaven, making it a great day trip during your stay. 🙂

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Just sit back and relax while you ride in a vintage coach that was built in early 1917 and being pulled by diesel trains. As you ride the narrated trip, you’ll see breath taking views of the mountain scenery, wildlife, & high rising cliffs.

The majority of the trains are diesel and operate from downtown Jim Thorpe Station into Lehigh George State Park from May through December – they also have a steam locomotive.

If you want to experience the entire Lehigh Gorge, they also offer special bike trips.

Mauch Chung Museum & Cultural Center

Learn about the Jim Thorpe’s industrial and cultural history at the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center.  

The Center is in a former church, with beautiful high ceilings and an opportunity to also enjoy the Victorian architecture.

Learn more about how this town took its name from the greatest athlete in the world, and where the great Olympian is buried. Be sure to view the 30-foot model of the Switchback Gravity Railroad.

St. Mark’s and St. John’s Episcopal Church

Another beautiful landmark to visit is St. Mark’s and St. John’s Episcopal Church.  It was constructed from 1867-1869 and considered one of the most notable Gothic revival churches in Pennsylvania.  The Tiffany and Gibson stained glass are simply beautiful.

The Old Jail Museum

Once you’re in town, you might as well visit the Old Jail Museum.  It was built in 1871 and closed in 1995. 

Sign up for a tour and learn about the story of the condemned Molly Maguires, while walking through the dungeon and gallows.  You may also bump into one of their friendly ghosts, when you take their ghost tour.

 Asa Packer Mansion

The Asa Packer Mansion is a historic house museum on Packer Road that was completed in 1861.  This was the opulent home of the coal and railroad magnate and founder of Lehigh University. 

In 1912, Asa Packer’s daughter willed the family home to the Borough of Mauch Chunk, as a memorial to her father. 

It is a very unique 3 story and 18 room Victorian Mansion with approximately 11,000 square feet of living space.

Jim Thorpe Storefront – Big Creek Vineyard

After a long day of touring, you can stop by the Big Creek Vineyard Storefront.  They have a wine tasting bar with all of the wines offered at their vineyard.  It’s $5 for 5 tastes. 

The staff was very friendly and you may end up buying a few bottles to take home.

Jim Thorpe Ghost Walks & Talks

Jim Thorpe Ghost Walks are a one mile round trip that start at Jim Thorpe, 24 Broadway. Led by a costumed storyteller with a lantern.

They also have Ghost Talks in the in the Harry Packer Mansion.
